Information graphics (also called infographics) are graphic visual representations of information that aim to present information quickly and clearly. Their main purpose is improving cognition by utilizing graphics to enhance the human visual system’s ability to see patterns and trends. The paper “The Impact of Infographics in Education”, written by Mobina Beheshti and Huseyin Bicen, investigates what are students’ thoughts on using infographics in the education system and whether they deliver satisfactory results in academic communication.
In academic communication infographics can be used to illustrate complex information in a compact form. It is a feature that enables teachers to prepare various learning activities that increase the collaboration, engagement and conceptual understanding of the learners.Example of an infographic design
The authors of the paper conducted a research designed as a quantitative study with a total number of 163 undergraduate students. During this study they gathered data by using close-ended questions and analysed it via the descriptive analysis approach.
After providing the participants with the necessary information on the topic of visual communication and also with some samples of educational infographics related to their field, they conducted the survey by giving 20 statements to the students. The scale for the questions was set to go from “Strongly Disagree” to “Strongly Agree” and the results showed that 83.7% of the students prefer using visual literacy in education. They considered it more engaging than learning with textual information, books or other types of traditional materials.
In summary, it can be stated that the aim of this research paper is to investigate students’ perceptions on infographics in their learning process and increase awareness of the benefits that can be acheived by using visual communication.
